DesTechAZ 2018
The dinner opened with opening remarks and big announcements from Governor Doug Ducey and Arizona Commerce Authority’s Sandra Watson regarding the creation of a new Institute for Automated Mobility in Arizona and their groundbreaking collaboration between Intel, ASU, and public agencies in Arizona.
Up next was Woz and Pitbull discussing how blockchain technology can be used to disrupt the music industry including a special shout out to Pitbull’s recent “Smack-a-thon” winners who were in attendance. The duo have more in common than you might think. Steve Wozniak has a huge passion for music. Not only did he invent the personal computer, he created the blueprint for outdoor music festivals when he financed and produced US Festival in the early 80’s. Like Pitbull, they are both strong advocate of artists’ rights and not just leaders, but industry disruptors who has used their world-wide fame to help educate and empower underserved communities.
The night was full of big announcements from Intel, APS and Woz ED’s CEO Karen Young, who also had a personal conversation with Woz earlier in the day. View conversation here. Woz was back onstage with the Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin and Blockgeeks co-founder Vlad Martynov to discuss blockchain and crypto-currency, its ability to spur disruption and innovation in multiple industries and its potential impact to affect change and society overall.
The evening ended with a fireside chat between expert moderator Vanessa Ruiz and Armando Christian Perez aka “Pitbull”, who coincidentally went to the same high school in Miami, Florida. They discussed Pitbull’s background, reasons he chose to focus on educating children, especially in underserved communities, and his plans to bring his Florida based SLAM charter school to Arizona.
